Tube strike planned for August 19 – Business Traveller

Ahead of the rail strike tomorrow [July 27]the RMT union has announced that London’s tube workers also plan to strike next month.

The strike is currently set to take place on August 19 due to an ongoing dispute over pensions and jobs.

The union said that the planned strike has been “prompted by TfL [Transport for London]’s refusal to share the details of a draft government proposal they received regarding funding of the transport system in the capital, in secret and without any discussion with their recognised trade unions.”

It has given TfL until August 2 to provide three assurances:

  • No reduction in jobs
  • No detrimental change to staff’s pensions
  • No changes to working conditions imposed

An additional rail strike is also set to take place on August 18 and August 20.

Three days of national rail strikes set for July and August

Announcing the latest round of strikes RMT general secretary Mick Lynch, said:

“Our members will once again take to picket lines in this important dispute over pensions, jobs and conditions.

“They have been messed around by TfL and Mayor Sadiq Khan. And to add insult to injury they have not seen the detail of this funding letter from government.

“Unless there can be assurances made about jobs, pensions and detrimental changes to working conditions, then our strike on August 19 will go ahead.”
